By five votes to four CBC councillors on the scrutiny committee threw out both proposed development briefs (one with a school and one with without) for the Central Motors site yesterday.
The recommendation was proposed by Cranfield councillor Alan Bastable who described the "nightmare" access and added: "There is a determination in strategic planning and education departments to force this site through and this must not be allowed."
Cllr Sue Clark in a letter to the committee said Flitt Leys was totally unsuitable as an access ("ridiculous") and there was already considerable aggravation around blocked garages.
Star turn was Cllr Nigel Young seeking to push through the development brief on behalf of the executive. It was pointed out that one of the development briefs, leaving the school out actually referred to it being in. "It's a typo he said."
Back to the classroom for you Cllr Young.

Indeed, a welcome breakthrough. Those opposing the brief(s) were put under huge pressure by executive member Cllr Nigel Young to toe the line. I am reliably informed that when he brought the brief to the Executive first time round he couldn't get a seconder - which is why it ended up back at the Scrutiny Committee.
