Flitwick station

The latest exchange in the Flitwick station bridge saga.  I think users are going to have to get used to a tour of Flitwick after buying their tickets, to get onto Platform 1. What joy

Dear Mr Pollock

Thank you for your email of 27 March 2013 concerning the refurbishment of the footbridge at Flitwick station and I apologise for the delayed response.

The work on the footbridge commenced on 14 January 2013 and work will be on-going for twenty weeks with significant parts of the bridge being removed and replaced, the estimated completion for this is 31 May 2013.

While there will be minor disruption for customers there should be no disruption to services calling at or passing through Flitwick.
To minimise disruption to customers, the refurbishment will be carried out in three phases with some work being carried out at night. The first phase will see replacement of the access route to the southbound platform, 1. Temporary steps, leading from the road above the platform will be put up to retain access to the platform. Extra signs and suitable lighting will be installed temporarily to ensure passenger safety.

Work will then move on to the northbound platform, 4, to the side of the ticket office. While these stairs are closed, passengers will have to use the road bridge to reach the other platforms. This will add an additional three to five minutes if buying tickets for southbound services. There will again be signs and appropriate lighting.

The final phase will see the renovation of the stairs on the island platform, numbers 2 and 3. As there is no other way from the footbridge on to this platform, so work will be carried out between 2300 and 0530 with little disruption to passengers during the day.

Recently work has been paused on the refurbishment of Flitwick footbridge. While initial work on the bridge went to plan, our project team was concerned that scaffolding erected by Network Rail's contractors extended too far on to the platform. To ensure that customers can move easily up and down the platforms, the current scaffolding will be removed. Work will instead be carried out using mobile elevated platforms which can be moved on and off site as needed. Work is continuing on the temporary staircase to access Platform 1, with the rest of the project continuing as intended.

Please rest assured that Network Rail and First Capital Connect are fully committed to this project and it will be completed despite this minor delay.

Thank you for contacting First Capital Connect.

Yours sincerely
