Grass cutting

Our current grass cutting and grounds maintenance 4-year contract comes to an end next spring. It is the single biggest expenditure item in the parish council's approximately £82K annual budget. It is the locally funded and delivered service which generates the strongest opinions among parishioners - in my opinion.

We will be taking soundings from precept payers - plus listening to the ones who supply them without any encouragement - and drawing up a spec for going out to tender.

If you have views you can post them on this blog or email me at broadgreen68@btinternet.com, in complete confidence. You can also email the parish council clerk at cranfieldpc@btconnect.com.

In addition you can share your views with parish councillors at their quarterly surgery next Wednesday 13 June at 7.30 in Holywell School. We need all the information we can get.

That is a lot of money for cutting grass for a year. I'd like to see what is done and when its done and how many hours are being quoted for before i renewed the contract. Id be looking at alternatives, another company, a smaller company that may be cheaper. Buying equipment and employing someone directly.

I would agree with J.Nakielski that an expenditure that big should be in-house, that is NOT outsourced.
Secondly, it should be noted that in a semi-arid region such as Bedfordshire, the grass should generally be mown less frequently than it is (which would also save money).

Can anyone provide a figure for exactly how much this costs per year?
